JODY

Math, SAT/ACT

Jody’s talent for explaining complex concepts became apparent in ninth grade, when he began a peer tutoring program in his New York suburban high school. Twelve years later, after receiving a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University and a Master’s Degree in interactive education from New York University, he founded Empire Edge. Jody has worked with math students in many of New York City’s private and independent schools. He has meticulously selected each advisor based on expertise, enthusiasm, patience, and love of teaching. As a senior advisor, he speaks with each client regularly, answering questions and devising individualized long-range objectives.

CHRIS

Biology, Chemistry, Math

Chris is the Director of Math and Science at Empire Edge. He works closely with Jody and with the other tutors to ensure that all of our students have the best advising experience possible. Before coming to Empire Edge, Chris studied Biology and Psychology at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He then worked for Teach for America as a classroom science teacher before focusing on individual instruction. Chris enjoys not only helping students to learn content, but also to love learning about math and science.

COURTNEY

Math

Courtney Pierce received a B.S. in Finance from Penn State University, with honors, and a Master’s in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently the chair of the Special Education department and a member of the math faculty at a high school in Harlem. Throughout her teaching career, Courtney’s passion has been making high-level math accessible to all students. She enjoys advising because it allows her to work closely with clients to help them build both content knowledge and confidence.

DANIIL

Math, Finance, Physics

Daniil is from Brooklyn, NY, and graduated from Cornell University with a double major in mathematics and economics. He started tutoring math in junior high school and expanded to statistics and economics while at Cornell. In addition to his majors and tutoring, he enjoyed coursework in engineering, city planning, and his time with the men’s water polo team. As a Soviet-American, he spent his youth competing in math and chess competitions, and believes that anyone can succeed in mathematics when taught with the proper care and attention.

Alex graduated from Columbia University, magna cum laude in Applied Mathematics with a minor in English Literature. He currently works as a Network Quality and Compliance Analyst for a large tech company, and has experience tutoring in a wide range of subjects, including Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, and other levels of mathematics. He enjoys helping students sharpen their analytic and logical skills in a variety of subjects, while encouraging students to develop the techniques and confidence to approach new topics with a positive outlook. He takes great pride in focusing his teaching on the unique talents of each student in order to help students achieve their best.

ANDREW

Andrew is from Brooklyn and graduated summa cum laude from Yale University with a degree in English and creative writing. His studies also included chemistry, math, and computer science. He tutors high school and college students in a wide range of subjects, including chemistry, math, and writing. In addition, Andrew helps prepare students for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and SSAT. He enjoys keeping the atmosphere lighthearted and having fun with his students, while still accomplishing serious work.

Joshua tutors SAT and ACT writing and verbal, US and World History, English Literature, and writing. He has written historical and political-economic analyses and cultural reviews for over a dozen publications. He received his BA, cum laude, in modern history from San Francisco State University and his MA, magna cum laude, in Modern European Studies from Columbia University. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Political Science at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Lily grew up outside of Chicago, Illinois and migrated to the East coast to attend Yale University. After college, she joined the New York City Teaching Fellows program and spent eight years as a classroom teacher, teaching Math courses ranging from pre-Algebra to Calculus and tutoring her advisees in a wide range of high school subjects. She simultaneously earned her master’s in Teaching and her Professional Teaching Certificate. Lily loves to teach and knows that every student can and will learn with the right approach, believing strongly in a conceptual, discovery-based, and student-focused approach to instruction. She loves to work with students individually and see them reach their own potential.

Mike graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell University, where he studied Italian language. After graduation, moved to Thailand and Korea, where he studied Thai and Korean. During this time he, began his career as a teacher, teaching English as a Second Language and SAT preparation. While he loves teaching in the classroom, he believes there is nothing like the one-on-one atmosphere of academic advising, as it allows the advisor to take a holistic approach that addresses a student’s individual organizational habits, approach to the material, and goals.

SARAH

Spanish, History

A native of Orange County, CA, Sarah made the move to New York last summer after graduating magna cum laude from the University of Southern California with a degree in Political Science and Middle East Studies. Sarah speaks Spanish, Arabic, and elementary Farsi, and worked as an advisor for USC’s student-athletes in Spanish, writing, and political science. Additionally, she spent three years as a columnist for USC’s student newspaper, focusing on social and political issues. Now an MA candidate at Columbia University, studying comparative politics, Sarah hopes to eventually become a respected foreign policy figure and advisor. In the meantime, Sarah is thrilled to be continuing as an academic advisor in NYC and working with students to help them break through difficulties and excel.

Alexis recently graduated from Williams College with a degree in History and Art History. Growing up in a military family, Alexis has lived in every corner of the United States and was lucky enough to spend a couple years in Mexico City. Her first stop in each new town was the library to feed her love of reading. She realized she could give back to these libraries and began teaching in the tutoring centers. Alexis enjoys sharing her passion for learning and helping students realize their own academic potential.

Math

Kevin grew up in San Antonio before attending the University of Texas in Austin. After earning his bachelor’s degree in mathematics, he began working as a high school teacher. Now, he’s pursuing a master’s degree (also in mathematics) at New York University. As an advisor, Kevin strives to make his students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. He’s always excited to work with students from all walks of life and all mathematical abilities, precisely because he finds that he often learns many new things from them as well. When he’s not crunching numbers, Kevin is often found playing basketball, doing crossword puzzles, or watching old tennis highlights on YouTube.

Michael studied Physics at University of California, Santa Cruz. He has always deeply enjoyed working with young people in their pursuit of gaining a deeper understanding of the subjects that they are studying. Michael takes pride in encouraging his students to have a personal relationship with their academic material so that they may have greater success.. He has advised students in Statistics, Math, and Physics at Berklee College of Music, Cambridge College, Roxbury Community College, and various high schools. Last summer, he created his own physics curriculum for a five week course that he also taught. Michael also spends his time playing saxophone, writing music, and playing basketball.

Doug graduated with Honors in 2007 from the University of Arizona with a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics/Molecular and Cellular Biology, and a minor in Spanish. After college, he spent 3 years at the National Institutes of Health, collaborating with biotech industry to develop technology for the detection and treatment of autoimmune diseases. In 2010, Doug matriculated into the Mount Sinai School of Medicine MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), where he works to pursue his MD, as well as his PhD. Doug works with Empire Edge as a biology advisor.

Semmie is an MIT graduate, New Jersey native, and current Master’s student at Columbia. After completing her B.S. in neuroscience, she worked in research in Boston before coming to New York to pursue graduate studies. Semmie discovered her love of teaching through her involvement with several non-profit organizations in college. She especially enjoys introducing students to STEM, as part of the Empire Edge team advising math and science.

Andy graduated from New York University with a degree in Finance, and prior to joining Empire Edge, worked for a number of years as a corporate bond analyst. He found his love for teaching as a math advisor at NYU and has since has worked with many high school, college, and graduate students on a variety of subjects, including SAT prep, math, finance, and accounting. He relishes every opportunity to share what he has learned and to bring the joy of discovery to others. In his spare time, Andy can be found poring over stock charts, practicing martial arts, and trying to make a dent in his reading list.

Jordan grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and moved to the east coast to attend Sarah Lawrence College. There, he concentrated in philosophy of mathematics, media theory, and writing. During his time he did grant-based research in mathematical logic, attended the University of Oxford, founded a chess club, and co-edited a publication of undergraduate theory work. He is the recipient of Sarah Lawrence’s Gaylord Donnelley Science Scholarship and Wadham, Oxford’s Rex Warner Prize in Literature. After graduation, he began teaching at a private school near Washington, D.C. He has taught courses in mathematics, modern physics, literature, media theory, philosophy of science, writing, studio art, and interdisciplinary studies. As well as tutoring with Empire Edge, he currently works remotely as a distance education specialist.

Learning, inside and outside of the classroom, has always been a passion of Sophia’s. After graduating from Harvard University with a degree in Science History in 2012, she joined Teach for America as a DC public school teacher. She taught Biology, Environmentalism, and Music for two years before moving to New York to pursue music full-time. Fortunately, however, she has been able to continue her relationship with education. As an advisor with Empire Edge, she is able to individualize her teaching to the needs of each student. She hopes to instill in her students excitement for the material, as well as understanding.

Dan grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated summa cum laude from Williams College, where he studied English and played four years of varsity baseball. After graduation, he moved to New York City and has spent the last two-and-half-years working as a private educator in subjects ranging from history to literature to the SAT. By approaching the material with energy and enthusiasm, he tries to make each lesson into an activity rather than a chore. Outside the classroom, his interests include sports, chess, movies, and literature.
